Beyond the Traditional with Edward Hlavka

Beyond the Traditional with Edward Hlavka
This workshop is sure to be an energetic and creative one, destined to fire the imagination. Mr. Hlavka will assist artists of all levels in transposing an idea into a sculpture. It can be a daunting task to successfully derive an image from the minds eye into a concrete form. Edward will guide you through your approach, concept, design and execution, to a final expression of your creativity. This exciting process begins before class time. One-on-one, Edward will confer with each artist, making sure you arrive ready to create. Sculpture size should be limited to under 24" in scale and can include all subject matter, abstract, animal, or figure.

General Outline:
  • Day 1 - Create armature, block in rough forms, focus on composition, focal point, and content
  • Day 2 - Address problem areas, develop sculpture toward desired concept
  • Day 3 - Fine tune sculpture work according to artistic preference.
Cost: $550.00 / $200 non-refundable deposit (materials not included, available to purchase on site)

Class size is limited to 10 students; deposit required to reserve space. Ages 15 and up.

Anatomy of the Portrait with Edward Hlavka
This workshop is designed to help the novice approach, with confidence, the basic elements involved in sculpting a life size human head. Emphasis will be placed on realism with a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Mr. Hlavka will define his principles of anatomy, approach, and structure. He will teach proportion, measurements, and effects that achieve an individual likeness. Edward will tutor in the depiction of finer details to evoke a sense of character and spirit. Sculptures will be done in an oil based clay in the preparation for a bronze casting. Students will experience a broad range of information intended result of building for the future. Class will work from a live model.

  • Day 1 - Set up and block in the head
  • Day 2 - Likeness and lifelikeness
  • Day 3 - Fine tune details and finish
